Yoga: How I lost 30 Pounds-Never Saw Them Again

In January of 2008 I set off for a long trip to India to study in Mysore, when I returned in late February I was 30 pounds lighter and I have kept that weight off ever since. It’s been 7 years!

A friend who knew me “before” and then “after”, recently asked how did this happened. Exploring her question led me to understand that it was not just because of the yoga, or the food, and certainly not because I was mean or deprecating to myself.

Here is what I learned and the new healthy habits I implemented to allow the release to happen.

Ashtanga Yoga: Is Mysore Becoming Unsafe For Women? 3 Things You Can Do Now

A woman has recently been attacked by men in the area of Gokulam in Mysore as she was walking towards the led-ashtanga yoga-class that is held at 4:30 in the morning, and we are told, she would have been raped would it not have been for neighbors that intervened and stopped it.

Who tells me this? Anu.

Anu runs a cafe in Gokulam, Mysore, only a few blocks from the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute to which hundreds of students pour in during the months in which Sharath and Saraswati Jois (grandson and daughter of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois) open the doors to teach.

Ashtanga Yoga Vocabulary: 10 Terms To Know Before Heading To Class

Ashtanga Yoga has some specific words and terms that confuse me! said a friend recently as we were talking about styles of yoga, and she was curious about the Mysore practice I do.

I could relate. Aside for the poses being mostly called in Sanskrit there is a rainbow of terms used within Ashtanga yoga that can be intimidating.

Here is a list of 10 terms I can think of that could come handy for someone approaching this wonderful practice. I also wrote their meaning, in a short and simple way, making it a bit more accessible, or so I hope.
