Ashtanga Yoga: Is Mysore Becoming Unsafe For Women? 3 Things You Can Do Now

A woman has recently been attacked by men in the area of Gokulam in Mysore as she was walking towards the led-ashtanga yoga-class that is held at 4:30 in the morning, and we are told, she would have been raped would it not have been for neighbors that intervened and stopped it.

Who tells me this? Anu.

Anu runs a cafe in Gokulam, Mysore, only a few blocks from the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute to which hundreds of students pour in during the months in which Sharath and Saraswati Jois (grandson and daughter of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois) open the doors to teach.

Mysore: When To Register, When To Go

I received some inquiries into -the site I put together with information about Mysore and practicing at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute-
For example: When to go?  and also when to register?
The shortest answer is of course to keep a close watch on the website: as things change and nothing is set in stone.  There is a “News” section that keeps updating with information.
The website
For example, as of today, the four last bits of news inform us that a) The official list of teachers is to be found here and all teachers appearing in other lists will be removed b) Applications to study in Mysore are no longer accepted through mail and must be done online c) a note to teachers: they are updating their lists and d) there should be a 2 month lapse between visits to India on tourist visa.

Ashtanga Flash News: Shala in Mysore to expand and have classrooms, library!

Just heard from Martina and Jen that Sharath told them this afternoon that he is building another house down the road of the shala for the whole family.
This means the current house, that hosts the yoga room and offices now, will be a whole yoga institute.  It will have chanting classes in actual classroom rather than a bathroom!, AND a library!, how cool is that?!
Timeline is 18 months.
I added the information to where I am keeping all information about Mysore.

If you would like to share something or post something of interest about Mysore in your own blog let me know and I will link to you.

Leaving Mysore, 12 things I learned in this trip

Ah, February! It is time to come back home to the freezing North East, and I am very grateful for the opportunity of this trip. Gratitude to the Gods!

On the right there is the picture I took this morning before practice, with Saraswatti.  Her friendliness always amazes me.

These are 12 of the many things I learned this time:

  1. Breathing for dropping back must be much more intense than I ever imagined. I need to breathe as if I am grasping for life, very deeply. And then some more
  2. I have filled with air certain parts of my body I did not know I had
  3. I have practiced with the intensity equivalent to all the time I spent practicing before in my whole life
  4. Do you have a question?
